Level 2 charging solutions are most typically recommended for home charging. This is due to faster charging times, value for money and the additional functionality.
The majority of new electric vehicles come as standard with Level 1 EVSE. Level 1 charging is undoubtedly the most flexible and cost effective form of charging, however, its most limiting factor is its lengthy charging times. Level 1 chargers plug directly into a standard household outlet and can take over 24 hours to fully charge an electric vehicle. In cases where owners use their car infrequently this form of charging is advised.
Most electric vehicle owners choose to have a Level 2 EVSE installed at their home for a faster charging experience. Residential Level 2 chargers can fully charge a vehicle in less than 8 hours. Unlike Level 1, Level 2 will in most cases required the handy work or a registered electrician to install your charging unit. Cost of installation can vary depending on your home, installation requirements and the EVSE you select.
It is highly unlikely you will want a Level 3 fast charging station at your place of residence. This is primarily due to their energy requirements and price point. Level 3 EVSE can charge most electric vehicles from 0-100% in 30 minutes and range from $20K to $80K.
