4 of the Best Smart EV Chargers for your home in 2022

Over the years our team have tried and tested dozens of Electric Vehicle charging systems in an effort to best help you decide which home charging unit to purchase. The EV chargers we present to you today have been selected based on value for money, build quality, appearance and functions. All 4 chargers discussed today fit in the category of “smart chargers”, chargers which have been designed with additional safety, control and monitoring functionality.

Just before we jump into the product reviews, its probably best to explore some of the terminology used in the Electric Vehicle Supply Equipment industry.

Tethered and Untethered – an untethered EV charger is one that does not come build with an integrated charging cable or plug. An untethered unit requires a user to use an independent charging cable to connect to your vehicle. Untethered enables users to easily change the length
of their charging cable and to disconnect it for charging on the go. Tethered EV Chargers on the other hand come with an inbuilt cable at a specific length. Although you can’t remove the cable from the charger tethered chargers are the most common due their ease of use and cost.

Charging speed – While searching for a homecharging unit you will see the max power output advertised in Kilowatts or kW. You might also see some rated for single phase or three phase use. The maximum power your EV charger can deliver will largely be dependent the existing
electrical infrastructure in your home. Residential homes in Australia are usually built with a single-phase power supply, while three phase is normally reserved for commercial and industrial facilities. The most common solution our customers choose to install is a single phase 7kW charging unit. If you have any questions related to your existing infrastructure, seek advice from our team or
a qualified electrical contractor.

Type 1 and Type 2 plugs refers to the two types of plugs commonly provided by EVSE manufacturers. Although Type 1 sockets are being used less frequently by vehicle manufacturers its always worthwhile double checking before you order your new home charging unit.

Solar Integration – Solar integration capabilities enable your charger to speak directly with your PV system. Save money by powering your car directly from mother earth.

PEN Fault Detection – Pen detection is a system developed to remove a need for using an earth rod during the installation process. This saves time/money during the installation process and is why all of the chargers listed today come with an inbuilt PEN fault detection system.

Load Monitoring – Load monitoring technology is used in EV chargers to avoid a situation where charging your car causes a fuse in your home to trip. It does this by monitoring your homes power usage and reducing charging speed where needed to avoid a blackout situation. All of the chargers
discussed today have inbuild load monitoring capabilities, helping keep you out of the dark.

Now you are up to speed on some of the important lingo, lets jump straight into the best electric vehicle chargers currently available on the market.
